Alternative Learning Experience (ALE) Form

Parents and guardians may submit this GEVSD form to consider a planned family absence that has educational value and potential learning opportunities as an excused absence under our Alternative Learning Experience (ALE) portion of the District attendance policy.  Students can be approved for a maximum of 5 days of ALE excused absences per year. 

Parents can fill out one form for all students in your family, with a maximum of 5 student slots available in this form.  If more students are required, fill out a second form for any remaining students.  

The following criteria needs to be met in order for the ALE to be approved:

1.  Forms must be submitted 10 days in advance of the student absences.  Forms will be reviewed for approval no earlier than 30 days before the absence to ensure appropriate academic and attendance standing at the requested time of the ALE dates.
2.  Forms will be rejected if students have excessive absence hours, poor academic standing, or the ALE dates are during state-mandated testing windows or exam dates for high school credit courses.  Absences in this scenario will be marked as unexcused.  To check current absence hours of your student, go to PowerSchool and look at the total number of hours absent for the year.  Students who accrue more than 30 consecutive hours of unexcused absences will be required to have an Absence Intervention Team (AIT) meeting that begins the truancy documentation process in coordination with the Licking County Court System.
3.  We will approve ALE's that put the total absence hours no higher than 65 hours, as that is at, or more than, two-thirds of the way to the state-defined "10% Chronically-Absent" threshold of 90 hours for K - 6 students and 100 hours for 7 - 12 students.
4.  If the ALE is approved, the students in grades 7 - 12 must work with their teachers to secure make-up work deadlines.  Work prepared for the student by their teachers ahead of the ALE should be completed and handed in upon return from the ALE.  As with all excused absences, students have the number of days excused to complete other make-up work and assessments not given in advance of the ALE  We encourage families who have ALE's approved in grades K - 6 to reach out to their student's teachers.
5.  Students missing school for an excused ALE cannot participate in extra-curricular activities that day unless approved in advance by a building administrator.
